Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go (Ringo Starr)

.... Ringo Starr era un hombre nuevo en 1989... pero sin mucho qué hacer. Lo tentaba la idea de tocar en vivo, pero ¿cómo? No se sentía cómodo siendo el líder de una banda y aparte suponía, no sin razón, que un show suyo no era algo que pudiera tener mucha demanda como para encarar una gira. Fue entonces cuando recibió el llamado de un hombre que no conocía, David Fishof, quien tenía la idea de hacerlo salir de gira. Conversaron y finalmente Ringo le pasó su agenda para que se contactara con algunos músicos amigos y les preguntara si estaban interesados en trabajar con él por el verano. No era el compromiso de armar una banda, sino de hacer unos cuántos shows juntos y pasarla bien. Tras una ronda de llamados, Fishof volvió a contactar a Ringo y le dio la lista de aquellos disponibles: Billy Preston, Nils Lofgren, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Clarence Clemons, Jim Keltner, Joe Walsh y Dr. John. Nada mal: con ellos no sólo se podría armar una super banda, sino que cada uno podría tocar alguna de las canciones más exitosas de sus grupos o repertorios. A fines de los '80, el rock clásico ya no regía las aguas del mains-tream pero tenía una cuota de fieles seguidores entrados en años, que no se sentían atraídos por los Milli Vanilli del momento. Y muchos de esos músicos entrados en años ya no eran tan buscados como antes, por lo que el concepto además ayudaba a gente que tenía la necesidad de trabajar. Eso fue lo que constituyó el éxito de la All Starr Band, un vehículo eficaz para construir no solo una banda a la medida de Ringo, sino también para crear un show divertido y ágil. Se consiguió un sponsor y se anunció la gira con un mes de anticipación, lo que hacía pensar que no habría tiempo para un buen plan de difusión que activase la venta de entradas. No hizo falta: se agotaron en tiempo récord. Los músicos estaban en diverso estado de salud; algunos bebían y otros no, pero Ringo no necesitaba tutores y estaba lo suficientemente fuerte como para no tener una recaída. Todos conocían por lo que había pasado y se esmeraron en mantenerse sobrios y sanos.

"Estaba aterrado  antes  del Tour -confesó Ringo-, pero una vez que arrancó la primera canción me relajé. De todos modos, no quería quedarme pegado atrás de la batería. Muchas de mis canciones, como 'With a Little Help From My Friend' o 'Yellow Submarine', requieren mucho coro así que hay una gran multitud cantando todas las noches". De esa manera, Ringo podía entretener a la audiencia y divertirse él mismo tocando las canciones de otros, como cuando Dr. John hacía "Iko, Iko", o Levon Helm cantaba "The Weight", de su grupo The Band. La gente festejaba un clásico tras otro.

"Lo bueno de estos muchachos es que todos son estrellas en su derecho pero no pierden tiempo tratando de probar nada -explicó, didáctico, Ringo-. Eso nos hace un grupo feliz y la gira transcurre de manera positiva. Le mandé los detalles a un par de amigos con los que solía tocar y serán bienvenidos si se acercan... seguimos en contacto. Con Paul es como en una familia, una mes estás bien y el otro mal. Veo a George más seguido porque vivimos cerca". No hizo falta la participación de otros ex Beatles para que el espectáculo resultase un éxito (con más de 30 shows, a los que se agregaron otros siete en Japón). Ringo estaba haciendo nuevamente historia sin saberlo, ya que había sido el primero en experimentar y sacar provecho de una necesidad del mercado. Al poco tiempo, comprobaría esto en carne propia: "Es irónico -dijo-, no estuve en la ruta por años y cuando finalmente me decido todo el mundo viene detrás mío. Los Rolling Stones se amigan y salen de gira, The Who vuelve a tocar y, por supuesto, Paul Me Cartney, Me parece que hay un gran interes y por las viejas bandas británicas, pero el secreto es que la gente quiere escuchar hits. Quieren volver a escuchar esas buenas canciones una y otra vez". (pagina 191 ...)
